However, before that I must say a few words about the greatest singer of all time.
Al Jolson.
Jolson is not really a ‘classical’ musician but he is one of my favourite singers and he deserves to be mentioned in this article.
I suppose everybody has heard his singing at least once.
It was in the soundtrack for many movies.
The song “Mammy” is very famous and sung by many people but it’s not really the most representative Jolson song for me.
I prefer songs like “I’ll Be Glad When You’re Dead”, “You Made Me Love You”, or his remarkable interpretation of Ruslan and Ludmilla’s aria (you know, the tenor’s aria from Tchaikovsky’s opera Queen of Spades).
The popular music in Jolson’s time was not really ‘classical’ (in the sense that we know it today) but his singing is remarkable.
I suppose his voice is unique and very recognizable.
He was a great entertainer with arguably the most expressive voice ever.
Jolson was a black, jewish immigrant who was born in Russia (it wasn’t called ‘Russia’ during his time) and who later became an American icon.
He influenced many famous entertainers and singers including Frank Sinatra, Gene Kelly, Doris Day and, more recently, Michael Jackson.
Jolson is one of the important figures in the history of show business.
I can’t really say what his greatest work was.
It’s impossible to say anything meaningful about a great performer like him.
What I can do, however, is tell you how he influenced me as a singer and an entertainer (if it’s too early for me to write about that).
Jolson inspired me.
Anyway, if you want to know what a singer without music is, listen to this.
It’s the best voice ever recorded.
If you’re an opera fan (like myself) you might find it annoying but I don’t think so.
In fact I get very excited whenever I hear his voice.
I have some other singers that inspire me too but they are all of the same ‘music genre’.
Mario Lanza, Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo and Jose Carreras are all singers without music.
This last one is my favourite (at least in terms of voice). I’ve seen him on TV many times and I’m sure you will agree that his voice is extraordinary.
I like the other three as well but they don’t have what I would call ‘a real voice’.
They are all tenors and there’s something very artificial about their voices (especially Pavarotti).
It could be that I’ve never heard them live but it seems to me that everything is perfect in Carreras’ voice.
He is not perfect by any means but everything seems to fit together just right.
His voice, for me, is the most natural and ‘human’ among the five I mentioned here.
I’m aware that this comparison can be considered unfair (and probably inaccurate) because every singer has his own personality but it’s my opinion and I’m not going to change it.
Carreras is THE singer without music for me.
Actually, since we’re speaking of tenors, I guess it would be unfair if I don’t mention one of my favourite opera singers.
I have a lot of them but if I had to choose just one it would be Luciano Pavarotti .
In particular I’m fond of his interpretation of Nessun Dorma (from Puccini’s opera Turandot).
He did many shows in China and obviously that song was a big favorite for the audience.
I have no idea why but I find it very moving every time I hear it.
Anyway, he is a remarkable singer and I think that every opera fan should listen to him at least once.
I’m not really sure whether or not I should talk about Michael Jackson here but, since we’re talking about voices without music, it might be appropriate so let’s go for it.
As far as the ‘show’ goes, MJ is certainly one of the best but, as a singer, I don’t really like his technique.
His voice has two main features.
It’s very soft and he uses effects (pitch correction) to hit high notes.
I can’t emphasize this enough – MJ is a vocal genius.
